Teacher Spotlight: Alexis

Alexis is a naturally-gifted and passionate music educator who has been teaching music to kids since she was a teenager. An expert pianist, vocalist, and trumpeter, Alexis joined the Greensleeves teaching team in 2014, and some of her first students continue to blossom under her guidance today.

While at WCU, Alexis took part in the Incomparable Golden Rams Marching Band and the Cantari Donne Mastersingers. After graduation, she set to work teaching full time. This fall, she’s thrilled to begin a new job teaching Choir and General Music at Folk Arts-Cultural Treasures Charter School (FACTS), one of Philadelphia’s most progressive and highly-reputed K-8 schools.

This summer, Alexis is practicing to perform at a Woodstock 50 Year Celebration in her hometown of Shippensburg, PA. She’ll be doing a tribute to female “rockstars” and performing folk duets with her boyfriend, Pat. She’s also looking forward to travels in Mexico and Maine in the coming weeks.

Alexis’ all-time favorite musicians are Sara Bareilles, Sam Smith, and Lorde. Lately, she’s had Daniel Caesar, H.E.R., and Rex Orange County on heavy rotation.

Alexis says, “music is the universal language of all mankind.” She believes the process of musicianship is most valuable. She says, “I’m always telling my students that practice makes progress - striving to be the best musician you can be is important, but the process and the progress you make define who you are as a musician.”

Alexis hopes to one day pursue a Masters in Music Education or Piano Pedagogy. But for now, she’s thoroughly enjoying her role as an educator.

“I love that I can fuse my two passions together: making music and teaching and learning from children each day,” she says. “Empowering people to express themselves through music brings me joy unlike anything else!”

Thanks Alexis! We’re lucky to have you on board.
